Old Man Range

The Old Man Range has nothing higher between it and the South Pole. This is a very exposed part of the world and any conditions may be experienced at any time. There are tracks running all over this range but the best suggested bike trail is straight to the top via Symes Road, a traverse along to the Obelisk, then straight down the Prospect Track and back along the Alexandra to Clyde river track. This is approx. 39 km and is graded expert, with good fitness required. The views and scenery on this very high track (up to 1695 meters) are outstanding and the most spectacular you will get in the area.

The track starts at Fruitlands, 10 km towards Roxburgh on SH8. Symes Road leads off to the right and almost immediately starts a 9 km granny gear workout uphill. This is a well formed smooth but steep road and suitable for 4WD vehicles only. When the ridge line is reached, turn right for the 2.5 km traverse along to the Obelisk rock (Kopuwai) and the transmitter building.

After passing the building (the only one for many kilometers) the Prospect Track descends to the Fraser Dam Road. This is a rutted and rocky 4WD track that gets steeper on the way down. It is exposed to the weather but once down on the Earnscleugh flats a cruisy ride along the river track takes you back to Alexandra.

Care should be taken to check conditions and forecast before attempting this very exposed track. The average temperature up on the Old Man Range is around 00 and is often very windy. Be prepared and check with local Information Centre or bike stores for updated conditions.

It is however a great ride for the expert biker and if conditions are pleasant will be very rewarding. This trail traverses a combination of private land and conservation land; care should be taken to leave gates as they are found.
