Millennium Track / Horseshoe Bend |
|
|
This track runs between Millers Flat and Beaumont on the north side of the Clutha River. The metaled road provides an easy cycle through the stunning Beaumont Gorge as it follows the course of the river downstream. Following the line of the original road formation and the old railway track through this area, it is narrow and winding in parts. This is a public road so care should be taken with on-coming traffic.
Start at either Millers Flat township or the Horseshoe Bend car park. This car park is the start of a popular 3 km side trip to the Horseshoe Bend suspension bridge and track which leads back to SH8. There is an information kiosk at the highway describing the track and history of the area.
Approx. 1 km from the car park on the Millennium Track is the Lonely Graves site. There are two graves here. According to the story in 1865 William Rigney found the body of a good looking young man in the river. He buried it here with the headboard inscribed ‘Somebody’s Darling lies buried here’. When William died in 1912, he was buried beside ‘Somebody’s Darling’.
The trail continues down beside the river with wonderful scenic views of the Clutha River and Beaumont Gorge. This is an easy 23 km (Millers Flat to Beaumont) gravel road with some undulations. There are a number of picnic areas at marked locations. This track is ideal for a family ride with lots of time to explore and enjoy. |
