Hawksburn Road - Clyde to Bannockburn

The Hawksburn Road runs between Clyde township and Bannockburn, skirting the Cairnmuir Range on the southern side. Before a road was constructed through the Cromwell Gorge this was the route followed by coach and walking tracks through to Bannockburn and so to mining areas of the Clutha and Kawerau Basins. These may have followed original Maori routes possibly dating back to the 13th century when moa were hunted in large numbers throughout this area.

This road is now a well formed smooth gravel road all the way, except the last 5 km into Bannockburn which is sealed. Because it follows a pylon line it is locally known as the ‘Pylon Road’ but the route is Hawksburn Road through to Bannockburn Road.

From Clyde, cross the historic bridge over the Clutha River and turn right after 1 km to the signposted ‘Lookout’. The first 4 km is very steep and passes the lookout, with wonderful views over the Manuherikia Basin. The good 4WD road with some rocky steps ascends to Cairnmuir Flats where the pylons are then followed to the highest point.

After approx. 9 km of ups and downs, sidles and dips, go straight on at the junction of Hawksburn and Pylon Road. From here there is one final gully before the gradual descent on the tar seal into Bannockburn. The whole route is scenic with broad views across vast landscapes to the surrounding mountains.

This is an intermediate to expert route of approx. 25km. It is a mixture of smooth gravel, some tar seal, and some very steep climbs. A good level of fitness is desired. The Hawksburn Road is exposed and quite high so be prepared for all conditions after checking weather forecasts.
