Carricktown - Young Australian |
|
|
Carricktown is high on the Carrick Range behind Bannockburn and the site of another gold town from the 19th century. This area was never very rich with gold but that didn’t stop hundreds flocking here seeking their fortune. Today there are but few remains; stone ruins, a stamper battery, dams and rock walls. However, it is an awe inspiring bike ride with magnificent views over Cromwell and the Upper Clutha Valley. This route is approx. 30 km and is graded expert.
Starting at the Bannockburn township, ride up the Bannockburn Road away from the lake approx. 5 km before turning right on to the Nevis Road. This is a 4WD smooth, gravel road that ascends very steeply for 9 km to Duffers Saddle. Turn right at the top of the hill and after bearing left at the large rock (Watts Rock) 200 meters away, traverse the 4WD track along the ridgeline for another approx. 4 km. Another right turn and the descent begins. The Young Australian Water Wheel is passed (below the track, on the right) and is well worth a ride or walk down the 1 km track to view this relic of history. There is an interpretation panel explaining the workings and on the other side of the valley can be seen the stamper. This was moved over the gully from its original site beside the water wheel.
The track continues down the gully passing two well preserved dams, through the old main street of Carricktown. There are numerous building ruins and gold workings to be seen. All the way down this challenging hill wonderful views down to Cromwell and the Clutha Valley can be seen.
There are some steep and very rocky sections on this descent with large ruts. This track is very exposed so check conditions at local information centers first and BE PREPARED. |
