The traditional and quintessential Kiwi camping holiday experience is still a welcome feature in Central Otago. The climate and lifestyle mean that this region truly is one of the prime camping centres in New Zealand. Many families have fond memories of camping holidays over many years and even generations. With long hot summers, clear skies and clean rivers this is the place to visit. Whatever type of camping holiday you enjoy – you will be welcomed in Central Otago. In and around urban areas campers enjoy a wide choice of fully serviced camping grounds . There are also a selection of limited facility camp sites in some smaller locations – for example The Fraser Domain – in Earnscleugh and the St Bathan’s Domain in St Bathan’s. Freedom camping is currently permitted outside urban areas with some limitations. The Central Otago overnight parking policy allows those with self contained campers / motorhomes (i.e. water and waste tank facilities) to camp for up to 3 days. In all other cases freedom camping should only be in locations where there are appropriate toilet and waste disposal facilities (Lake Dunstan has some suitable locations).
