The people of Central Otago have embraced and advocate waste minimisation and sustainable living practices as a means for our communities to live in harmony with the natural environment.
Weekly kerbside collection for recyclables is done in Alexandra, Clyde and Cromwell by Central Otago Wastebusters, a community-based society which the council supports financially. Wastebusters has recycling centres which accept containers at Alexandra, Cromwell, Omakau, Oturehua, Ranfurly, Naseby, Patearoa, Roxburgh and Tarras to minimise waste going to landfill.
Household waste is collected at the kerbside by a wheelie bin collection service in townships and some rural areas then taken to transfer stations at Alexandra, Cromwell, Ranfurly and Roxburgh for disposal (along with other material inappropriate for recycling) in landfills. Two greenwaste only sites operate at Millers Flat and Ranfurly.
