The towns of Central Otago owe their existence to either the Goldrush (Cromwell, Clyde and Alexandra, Roxburgh, Naseby) or Farming (Ranfurly and Omakau). These towns have become the hubs for the surrounding area’s primary output with the servicing of farming and horticulture being the backbone of much of the commercial, retail and industrial sectors in the area.
In line with the national and international trend away from direct primary employment and wealth generation, the towns of Central Otago have become increasing self sufficient, with stand alone industry or tourism generating wealth. Central Otago towns now offer excellent levels of services for places of their size, and while there may be a lack of choice in some areas there are few services that are not available within the district.
Central Otago townships have become attractive destinations for living in their own rights. Building and construction booms have seen Cromwell, Alexandra and Clyde all grow rapidly and led to the building and business services business sectors becoming major drivers for the local economy. |
