The population of Central Otago (age 15 and over) has fewer formal qualifications than the national average.
This is typical of smaller semi-rural areas in New Zealand. Concentrations of higher qualifications tend to be in the larger urban centres. For example, see Dunedin which, due to the prominence of the University, probably has the most educated population in New Zealand.
For a provincial area with only one resident tertiary provider (Otago Polytechnic in Cromwell) the population of Central Otago can be considered well educated.
